Andrew Morris on the new OAR Team

Rowing an ocean is a major challenge to undertake and finding someone to replace Mick Dawson was no easy task. Taking on the North Atlantic requires experience and tenacity and I can’t think of a better person to step up to the plate than Roz Savage. As an ocean rower, Roz is a true professional who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the OAR Team. I am very much looking forward to working with her over the coming weeks as we get ready in the countdown to the OAR.

Introducing Roz Savage

Roz Savage to join Andrew Morris for the OAR

We are delighted to announce that Roz Savage will be joining the OAR Team.  Roz, holder of four world records for ocean rowing, is an eminent environmental campaigner who uses ocean rowing to inspire action on the greatest environmental challenges facing the world today.

Mick Dawson, who was originally set to row with Andrew, has been unable to devote sufficient time to prepare for the voyage due to his day job fighting pirates. Mick remains fully committed to the OAR Project however, and has taken on the role of leading the shore based team. He is currently in San Francisco refitting Bojangles as a live working exhibit at the Maritime National Historical Park on Hyde Street Pier.

The stark reality of life at sea

Mick describing the ship which rescued him.

It’s been a busy few hours on the world’s oceans for ocean rowers… and their rescuers! In the last 48 hours the six crew of Sara G were rescued from the Atlantic, while on the other side of the world in the Bass Straight, a crew of three requested assistance.

It’s a stark reminder that the ocean is in charge. Always. Whilst it would be easy to assume that these rowers were inexperienced or unprepared, the reality is that these boats were skippered and crewed by some of the most experienced ocean rowers in the world.

Mick and teammate Chris Martin were welcomed into the city with open arms by then Mayor, Gavin Newsom and presented with honorary life memberships at the historic Golden Gate Yacht Club in recognition of their achievement, also a world first.

At the Outdoor Show with the OAR team

An unexpected break from fighting the pirates this week saw me back in the UK and able to attend the Boat Show at the ExCel. Bit of an old stomping ground for me in my former life as a professional yacht Captain and I bumped into loads of old friends, particularly on the Sunseeker stand, who had my old yacht up for sale and on display.
